Masters in Physiotherapy in Canada
The Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program at Western is dedicated to being internationally recognized for excellence, leadership and innovation in Physical Therapy education, practice and research through dedicated clinical, academic and professional partnerships.
The mission of Western's Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program is to prepare graduates for entry-to-practice as autonomous primary care professionals with the requisite competencies to provide leadership and service to individuals and communities within a complex, dynamic global health care environment. Foundational principles of collaborative team- and case-based participatory learning guide the educational experience.
The Master of Physical Therapy (MPT) program prepares students for professional roles as clinicians, educators, consultants and researchers in a wide variety of practice settings (e.g., acute care, rehabilitation clinics, community settings) and is accredited by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC).
The MPT degree is awarded upon successful completion of a two-year curriculum which includes 60 weeks of classroom/laboratory work and 30 weeks of clinical experience. Clinical placements provide the opportunity for students to put into practice the theory learned in classrooms and laboratories.
The Master of Physical Therapy Program at Western University has completed the accreditation review process administered by Physiotherapy Education Accreditation Canada (PEAC). PEAC is an incorporated body under the Canada Not-for-profit Corporations Act and operates as the accrediting agency for physiotherapy education programs in Canada. The status of Accreditation, Partially Compliant was granted to the program on April 30, 2015 for the period until October 31, 2016. A description of Accreditation, Partially Compliant follows:
Accreditation: Partially Compliant
- A program is in compliance with 80-100% of the accreditation criteria in at least four standards and 50-79% of the criteria in no more than two standards
- This means there are some deficiencies for which progress towards compliance must be demonstrated in the next Progress Report
- There could also be issues and weaknesses to improve upon and report back about in Progress Reports
- If progress is not made, the program’s accreditation status could be changed to probationaryIf progress is made, the program’s accreditation status could bechanged to Fully Compliant
NOTE: Any newly-developed program will be awarded this level of accreditation until a progress report is submitted after the graduation of two cohorts of students.
